An ultra-Orthodox man was arrested in Beit Shemesh on the eve of the second Passover holiday on suspicion of systematically beating and abusing his wife and 10 children for over a decade.

Beit Shemesh police who were called to a house in town found remnants of fires the wife and children had lit to ward off the bitter cold.

The woman told them of a horrifying series of beatings and abuse she and her children had been subjected to by her husband, a 50-year-old yeshiva student.

She said her husband would lock her and the children in the house and cut off the power supply for several hours on end.

He also beat her and the children regularly with clubs.

In one case he wound a rope around the neck of his 15-year-old son and tried to strangle him.

Another son was beaten after opening a window without the father's consent.

The children told the police their mother was being beaten and in many cases she got beatings intended for them in attempting to shield her family from the father's rages.

Boiling water

During one pregnancy, the suspect poured boiling water on her during an argument.

On the holiday eve, after he again locked up the family, the woman finally summoned enough courage to unlock the door with a spare key she had secreted, and called the police.

Police officers involved in the case said the children, aged from four to 21, testified to the severe mental and physical abuse they had suffered for many years.

Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended the suspect's remand on Tuesday by four days and banned the release of the man's name to protect the underage children from publicity.

In a separate case, Jerusalem police arrested a 38-year-old resident of Ramat Shlomo quarter on Tuesday, suspected of mentally and physically abusing their eight children.

The man is suspected of beating the children, aged from eight to 17, in front of their mother over three years.

The victims told the police he also abused them mentally by torturing their pets. In one case he burned to death the children's pet tortoise before their eyes, because he grew tired of it.

In another case he chased the children's rabbit, kicked it and tried to slaughter it with a knife.

The woman and children told police the man forbade them to eat food he himself bought.

If the children took something to eat from the refrigerator, he would take it from them and return it. The suspect's remand was extended by three days on Tuesday.
